venomwolves: (confused thing-thing gerard)
Sigh. Before I get into past challenge/fanfiction related pieces, I want to get this year's general art haul out of the way... There's not much, really, I feel like I've only recently been trying to draw again. I think I feel bad for never posting outside of challenges and I'm somewhat nostalgic for making "sharable" art again, lol.

I did a couple finished comics strips, so I'll share those together ->
The first features Mikey Way and Bert McCracken based on this video of Amy Winehouse.

I made this before both of the challenge works I posted here previously. Lots of things were done differently, namely I did all of the colors on the same layer.... took a criminal amount of time considering how simplistic I wanted it to look, let me tell you. a word of advice for digital art if you didn't know: layers are your best friend! Otherwise, the line art is actually just a scan of my original pencil sketch with some minor clean-up-- with many of the digital pieces I've done so far, I just used a pencil drawn thumbnail as a guide for line art, however I definitely prefer how this looks to that. Although, I did have some issues finding a brush to color with that wouldn't look out of place with it. I'm not a fan of the one I chose and have since found a better one, but this looks fine for what it is.
Also can I just say, the weirdest things are a hit on tumblr. This did a modest 200-300 likes on instagram I think, but it literally breached 1k notes on the latter for SOME godforsaken reason. That's not something that happens to me on there too often! I'm flattered I guess, but also at a loss as to why such a scraggly piece caught so much attention. Beggars can't be chooser though, I suppose.

Then, just recently I did this Danger Days comic, which is based on this post by @/incorrectkilljoyquotes via tumblr (took some liberties). Fun fact, VERY rarely is any comic I make 100% my idea.

Now THIS. This is as good as my digital art gets as of right now. I'm very happy with the look and style of this. I found a paper texture I really like, and a brush that goes well with the line art (cleaned up pencil sketch like the other comic).
However, this did basically the opposite of the other work-- it did very poorly on tumblr but great on instagram. I must say, this feels like less of a win. Everyone on tumblr is so picky, it's an honor when something does well there; however, I'm very out of touch with instagram nowadays, so the success there feels somewhat impersonal... I guess it's all impersonal, to be fair. But tumblr is my preferred poison, so it was a bummer to see this flop there, especially since I'm so happy with how it came out... I get it though. This flavor of humor has become obsolete there. Which, to be fair, the comic has been in the making for quite some time and had lost it's funniness to me a long time ago--though since I started it, I felt obligated to go through with making it a finished product. Oh well. At least Instagram thought it was funny, lol.

Anyway, that's all I have for today. I do have something in the works at the moment that I'm kind of excited for, though it's not my usual thing at all. I've noticed I've drawn very little of current mcr, despite having so much new content to draw from nearly every night. I guess I'm stuck in my ways from when they weren't a band, always pulling things from the past. So I'm trying to break out of that a tad with this new piece. That's all I'll say on it at the moment.
Whelp. Until next time ✌

Another plug from this past challenge season!

Bandom Summer Blowout was borne from the discourse of this past BBB run, and is essentially the same thing, but more inclusive and I believe the wordcount requirements were shorter (I wanna say 15k rather than 20k), possibly among other things. The outcome was extremely small compared to BBB, but it was quite organized and consistent, which I liked. I hope it will come back around next challenge season, despite the small turnout.
Regardless, I chose the story But The Past Ain't Through With You by Fontainebleau, which is set in 2021. Basically, the guys of my chem are brought together by the sudden appearance of their most iconic doppelgangers of the past in the midst of a dysfunctional attempt at writing a new single. As they navigate the confusion and drama of their past selves' reactions to the present, the guys struggle to understand why this is happening and how they'll manage to get the doubles back to their own times. It's not my favorite characterizations of the guys and there's a decent bit of suspension of disbelief, but it's a fun story nonetheless with loads of introspection of the band's past and such. There is also a very slight inclusion of Frank/Gerard in the last chapter, with a brief scene that gets a little spicy, however it's a pretty solid T+ rating, and there's not an extremely clear resolution for the ship or the plot at large. Despite this, the open ending does not leave it feeling unfinished, and I was satisfied with it.
This was largely written before foundations of decay was put out, so things were still very up in the air about what to expect and such. The story is very much suspended in that unsureness we were all feeling during the lull before the tour, so it's definitely a product of its time, and is very interesting to look back on.

Anyway, on to my complementary art, which depicts Frank's doubles' reactions to seeing their future bandmates for the first time-- for context that does not really give much away, they are in a tour bus they rode from Jersey to LA, only just arriving to Ray's house (where they've all congregated) to see everyone and their doubles are waiting for them on the front porch.

Well... I made this before the piece I did for BBB, and it shows. I was still getting the hang of digital art and didn't really know much about textures or which brushes would look best, and though I learned a lot about layers in the piece, I. really don't like how it came out stylistically. I was also coming off of a multi-month artblock, so that didn't help. To me, this just doesn't look like something I would draw 😅 the way it's lined and colored is very sterile and lifeless, and revenge frank is the only frank I am happy with, regardless of the quality of the other elements.
To be fair, I think the piece objectively goes well with the story, and without knowing what my other work looks like anyone would think it's a decent illustration. And it is! It's a fine drawing! Just not one I'm particularly happy with. However, Fontainebaeu was very happy with it and that's all that really matters. That's the real purpose of all of this!

Anyway, definitely check the story out if you feel like reminiscing 2021 or just enjoy a good old fashioned time paradox doppelganger fic. Otherwise, that's my plug for today. That's the end of my challenge works for this year; however, I do have some from last year that never made it on here-- I might make similar posts for those at some point, as there's definitely lots to say on them.

Hello, it's been quite some time since my last entry!
A few things have changed since then, namely I've started journaling pretty frequently, so posting stuff about my personal life here has lost it's flavor (not that I posted exactly often anyway, lol). So to the few of you that may see this, don't expect to see that sort of thing from me anymore. However, I will say in reference to my past complaints that I did get to do some skating this past summer :)

Anyway, regarding bandom, I would love to go into unnecessary detail on my endeavors there!

Bandom Big Bang~
This past BBB season was kind of a weird one-- I wasn't particularly happy with some of the changes and decisions made by the new mods... a lot of unnecessary discourse came of it and it felt very gatekeeping in a lot of ways. Despite this, I didn't have the heart to opt out, since so many beloved writers were participating and there was a strong promise of great new content to come out of it.
I ended up choosing a story called Noise and Absolution by mausoleumheart, a used centric  fic set in the killjoys verse, which follows Quinn Allman's journey as an ex bli employee navigating life in the zones and figuring out where he belongs. Includes lots of action, twists and turns, and some bandom cameos (including the elusive fab four briefly). Though Quinn happens to be shipped with Bert Mccracken, the focus was on other issues mostly, leaving this feeling a bit tacked on... however, Hayley WIlliams has a fairly big part in the plot, and I really enjoyed her dynamic with Quinn, as random as that pair may sound.
I would be giving some things away if I explained exactly what's going on in
the scene I decided to illustrate, however it's definitely a highlight of that relationship and is one of my favorite parts of the whole work.

I have gone digital for the last couple big pieces... this was something I was very against doing for a while, but then I tried it and am a bit hooked. I still do very much prefer traditional, but. well, I did this on my phone with a very nice free little app called ibispaint, and it's all very convenient! With my current sluggish artistry state, this is not exactly doing me much good, but it's appealing. Sigh. Anyway, I'm fairly happy with how it came out, regardless, though I do wish I would have used a more paper-like texture, rather than the slightly tacky canvas look I went with.
But yeah. This is embedded in the chapter the scene appears in, and I implore you to read it! it's a roller coaster, very eventful.
One thing about the current mods is that they dropped the ball a bit on the advertising part of reveals-- not that they haven't made posts for any of the fics at all, but it's been extremely few and far apart so far, and Noise and Absolution has yet to have it's time in the lime light, so. please do check it out, it hasn't gotten much attention yet.

Alright, that's my plug for today. I may or may not do a couple others this week, we'll see.

Hello, it's been a while.

I'm terribly bored stuck at home with !! GET READY!! COVID! Damn, who could have guessed! Though I've been very conscious about this whole thing, it was brought into the whole house by my Dad's friend who conveniently tested positive AFTER he infected everyone in the house :^) it's been about 10 days and I'm pretty close to completely recovered, but the last dregs of stuffiness keeps holding on for some reason. It wasn't actually that bad in general, though. Pretty much a regular cold for me. Unfortunately, my parents look like they're gonna need another week or two before they stop acting like they've been hit by a bus, which I find very annoying. Part of me wishes I had more sympathy for them, but I'm honestly so unbelievably sick of both of them... times like this makes me wish I would have moved out already, but unfortunately I'm waiting till the spring to worry about that. And though I could technically go out at this point as it's been 10 days and I'm not showing explicit covid symptoms, as I said, I'm still slightly stuffy and would hate to spread this around even more... I won't have a choice by Saturday, though, as I need to make money.

IN OTHER NEWS, I impulse bought a pair of roller skates. Very oddly hyper-fixated on the idea of roller skating right now, despite the fact that I could hardly stay upright on them as a kid. However, now that I've ordered a pair, I'll have no choice but to make myself half decent at it. They're a chrome-y "holographic" color with blue wheels, toe stop and laces, very fun AND on sale. I'll have them by Thursday, so hopefully I'll be feeling ok to go out by then.

Also, A recap on my art life? Did a few commissions this past holiday season for a fic I somehow ended up wrapped up in the making of through a MCR book club discord server that I pretty much never participate in.
a cartoon pencil sketch of Frank Iero and Gerard Way cuddling on a couch
a cartoon pencil sketch of Gerard Way and Frank Iero, who's holding a baby bundled in a parka and wearing large sunglasses. they are standing in a gas station isle and Frank is scowling at Gerard while Gerard is avoiding eye contact and pressing his index fingers together sheepishly
The fic is Pinkish by Antspaul if anyone was curious. It's a kid fic, obviously. And very unreliably narrated, which I found somewhat suspenseful. I think it has just one more chapter to go till it's finished, which will be up sometime this week, I believe?

After that, I did a mini holiday exchange with a dear friend I made through vigorously complementing their fanfiction a few years ago. I'm still not entirely sure how well I fulfilled their gift, tbh, but I certainly tried very hard!
a cartoon colored illustration of Frank Iero and Gerard Way facing each other and holding hands with small smiles and vampire fangs. they're flamboyantly dressed in ambiguous period clothing. surrounding them is a mistletoe wreath
This was made with "campy vampires" in mind, which was one of their prompts. Though this is obviously not objectively bad, I'm just not entirely sure how much a pulled off the "camp" part. I don't know. Does this qualify as camp? Even if it does, camp is such a vast term and I don't think this is the flavor they were thinking of when they thought of the prompt... And though they obviously expressed that they liked it when I revealed it to them, it's kind of impossible to tell if they genuinely like it... idk! Anyway, what they made me was like. the fic of my dreams, so that didn't make me feel much better about this like. I feel shown up slightly, lmao. I know it's not about that, but I just feel bad, I wish I had the energy to have picked something a bit more ambitious from their list, but well. Look at me now, fully art blocked!

I also got commissioned by an internet friend to make a "guest page" for their original web comic, like... back in September, lmaoo. And it's still hardly started :) it's due in march so I still have plenty of time, but DAMN the art block be hitting so hard with this bitch. I have thumbnails for it and know exactly what I want, but I just can't execute it. Like I've tried so many times, it hurts yall. every time I start at it, it's just too,, ?? Like I can see that I'm trying too hard, and you see this REAL issue here is that I have incredibly low standards for what art I personally enjoy, like quality wise. And TO ME I peaked with the shitty little thumbnails I did for it, which is so bad. like NO!!! that's not how paid commissions should look, stop!! yet the loose simplicity of it is like PERFECTION in my eyes, it's so bad and I CAN'T replicate it bigger, which is an issue because the original is a miniscule pencil sketch. And well, anyway. I'll continue trying to get that how I want, even if it means pathetically trying to trace the thumbnails digitally *facepalm*

I THINK that was all I wanted to update and complain on. Thanks for reading my rambles.

*taps mic*

Oh boy, and I thought ao3 was intimidating. Welp, here is my attemp at posting an image on here, lol. I'm somewhat familiar with the process, but it's looking pretty funky as a wip...
Anyway, hi. I draw bandom dudes sometimes. This ones from a few years ago for bandom holidays-- not really made for anything in particular, just a little something based on a front bottoms song.
